Every good open source project eventually gets a mascot. Rust has Ferris. Go has the Gopher. Today, Rapina gets Juca.

Who is Juca?
Juca is a harpy eagle, one of the largest, most powerful birds of prey in the world, native to the rainforests of Central and South America. In Brazil, the harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) is iconic. Majestic. A little terrifying. Exactly the kind of energy we want associated with a Rust web framework.
The name "Rapina" is Portuguese for bird of prey. So when it came time to think about a mascot, a harpy eagle wasn't just a cute idea. It was the obvious one.
We called him Juca. A classic Brazilian nickname, the kind your avĂ´ uses. Unpretentious, warm, a little rough around the edges.
The design
We worked with maKKi, a talented designer from our community, to bring Juca to life. The brief was simple: flat vector style, clean like Ferris, but with personality.
It started with pencil sketches. Rough concepts, different poses, trying to find the character.

Then maKKi moved to digital, first exploring a purple/monochrome palette before landing on blue.

We went through a bunch of iterations. Natural harpy eagle colors vs. full blue, short legs vs. long legs, different face expressions. At one point someone said he looked "muito metaleiro" (very metal), and honestly that just made us like him more.
Here's one of the near-final iterations, before the sunglasses:

The final Juca is all blue. He's a Rapina bird, not a penguin, not a gopher. Flat vector, clean and scalable. Spiky crest, sunglasses, wings out. Confident without trying too hard.
What Juca represents
Rapina started as a Brazilian project. It was built with a philosophy of simplicity, minimal dependencies, and open source from day one. Juca carries that identity. He's Brazilian at heart, fast by nature, and just a little bit spiky when he needs to be.
He's also ours. Built by the community, for the community.
What's next for Juca
Juca will show up in release notes, docs, and anywhere Rapina lives. We're also opening a community thread to help shape his personality: catchphrases, lore, all of it.
If you have ideas, head over to the Github Discussion and make your mark on Rapina history.
Welcome to the flock.
Art by maKKi. Juca made his quiet debut in the v0.11.0 release notes. Did you spot him?
